Kindergarten through grade 8 have music appreciation classes once a week for 45 minutes. Below is a brief overview of the music classes at Immaculate Conception School.
Kindergarten through Second Grade
In Kindergarten music we focus on movement and listening activities. With the use of rhythm sticks and other classroom instruments, we gain an understanding of basic music vocabulary, build musical skills, and learn and compare various styles and forms of music . We SING with a focus on using proper vocal technique.
Grades Three and Four
In Grades Three and Four, we continue to enhance our movement and listening activities with various classroom instruments. We gain a more in depth understanding of music vocabulary, vocal technique, and various forms and styles of music. We also begin an introduction to instrument playing through the learning of recorder.
Students in grade 3 have the option of joining Glee Club for an extension of vocal singing.
Students in grade 4 have the opportunity to join ICSingers as an extension of vocal singing and also the opportunity to learn to play a band instrument.
Grade Five
Grade 5 focus on movement and listening activities. We will continue to gain a broader understanding of more music vocabulary. We sing, using proper vocal technique. We identify and use various classroom musical instruments as we learn and compare various styles and forms of music. We learn to work as a team and demonstrate what is takes to be a community through the learning of World Music Drumming.
Grades Six through Eight
Grades 6-8 continue to focus on movement and listening activities. We continue to gain a broader understanding of more music vocabulary. We sing, using proper vocal technique. We identify and use various classroom musical instruments as we learn and compare various styles and forms of music. We have an introduction to basic theory and music notation that we will use to create an original song. We learn and gain basic mastery of keyboard and guitar playing skills.
